Analytics Series:
Act on your Traffic

Have you ever wondered where your website visitors are coming from? Did they find you through a Google search, type your URL directly into their browser, or click a link from another site? Website analytics track traffic sources, which tell you exactly how people are finding your site. Understanding where your traffic comes from helps you make smarter decisions about what’s working, what’s not, and where to focus next to improve engagement.

Common Traffic Sources You’ll See

  • Direct: Someone typed your website URL directly into their browser or used a saved bookmark.
  • Organic Search: A user searched for something on Google (or another search engine) and found your site in the results.
  • Referral: A link from another website brought a visitor to your site.
  • Organic Social: A link from a social media platform led a user to your site.

These stats are fun on their own, but the real value comes from knowing how to act on them.

Turning Traffic Data Into Action

Organic Social is low, what can I do?
Your next steps should always tie back to your business goals. For example, are you trying to drive social media users to learn more about your services? Or push them toward a product or donation page? If social media is a priority, a strong social media strategy with clear calls to action is key. You can track how well that strategy is working by watching your Organic Social traffic over time and adjusting campaigns as needed.

Organic Search is low, I’m not finding business.
If your business serves a larger geographic area and relies on people finding you through search, SEO matters. Make sure the keywords your audience uses are sprinkled throughout your site. We recommend an SEO strategy that focuses on your services, service area, and your audience’s pain points to help your site show up when it’s most relevant. Don’t cast too wide a net. If your services are specialized, your keywords should be too.

Direct traffic is low, am I retaining customers?
Looking for signs of loyalty or engagement? Take a closer look at Direct traffic. Repeat visitors, returning donors, or regular blog readers often show up here. You can even dig deeper to see how many of those visitors are returning users, versus first time users.
